GOAL:  Immediate County Board approval of the Use Permit for the next phase of the Yorktown renewal.  This is essential to keep the project on schedule and allow construction resumption in late June 2008.  Between use Permit approval and construction start are several key processes: full development of the plans & specs, construction bid advertisement and award, and the building permit processing.  A June 2008 start was promised when Arlington voters voted 77% to support $24.8 million in continued bond funding in November 2006.

BACKGROUND:  Arlington rightly prides itself on periodically renewing its schools.  While Washington-Lee had the luxury of a relatively quick, concentrated renewal process due to its large site, the YHS process has been underway since 2000, when the first planning money was voted in the 2000 school bond.  The Phase I addition of three stories, 55,000 square feet and 30 classrooms was completed in 2004.  Now, the schematic design for the 300,000 square feet reconstruction of the remaining school, some of which still dates to its grade school beginnings circa 1950, must be approved by the County Board via the Use Permit so that the phased renewal may continue.
